4th Annual Firkin Fest Set at Moe’s Original Bar B Que in Mobile, AL

Presented by Moe’s Original Bar B Que and Budweiser Busch Distributing, the 4th Annual Firkin Festival will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 701 Spring Hill Avenue. Benefiting the American Cancer Society, the festival indulges craft beer lovers that include novices and aficionados alike. This year’s participating breweries include Avondale Brewing, Back Forty Beer Company, Black Warrior Brewing Company, Blue Point Brewing, Druid City Brewing, Fairhope Brewing Company, Grayton Brewing, Mill Creek Brewing, Rocket Republic Brewing Company, Straight to Ale Brewing Company and Yellowhammer Brewing. 

“Participating breweries will showcase distinctive cask ale in a firkin, a barrel made of stainless steel that holds 10.8 gallons of beer,” said Michael Southerland, Craft Brand Manager for Budweiser-Busch Distributing. “Firkins are unique in the sense that the beer goes through a secondary fermentation in the vessel.”

During and after the festival of beers, entertainment will include live music with performances by Yellowhammer with special guest Jennifer Hartswick of the Trey Anastasio Band at 3pm and Johnny & the Loveseats with Johnny Hayes of the Voice at 5pm. Doors open at 2pm with a tapping ceremony at 2:30pm. Sampling ends with an awards ceremony at 5:30pm. Local and regional breweries will showcase distinctive cask ale in a firkin, a barrel made of stainless steel that holds 10.8 gallons of beer. Firkins are unique in the sense that the beer goes through a secondary fermentation in the vessel. There are 14 participating breweries that include Fairhope Brewing (Fairhope, Alabama), Druid City Brewing (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), Brew Stooges (Huntsville, Alabama), Rocket Republic Brewing Co. (Huntsville, Alabama), Back Forty Beer Co. (Gadsden, Alabama), Blue Pants Brewery (Madison, Alabama), Grayton Beer Co. (Grayton Beach, Florida), Cahaba Brewing (Birmingham, Alabama), Yellowhammer Brewing (Huntsville, Alabama), Black Warrior Brewing (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), Tallgrass Brewing (Manhattan, Kansas), Salty Nut Brewery (Huntsville, Alabama), Chandeleur Brewing (Gulfport, Mississippi), and Avondale Brewing (Birmingham, Alabama).

Doors open at 2pm with a tapping ceremony at 2:30pm. Sampling ends at 5:30pm with an awards ceremony at 6pm.  There will be live music featuring Winston Ramble during the fest, Kristen Diable from 6:30pm-8pm, and Strung Like a Horse from 8:30pm-10pm. On sale at area Moe’s restaurants, all inclusive Firkin tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at door and includes entrance to the festival, samples of each firkin, crawfish, sample glass, koozie, literature and live music. Money raised will go to benefit the local American Cancer Society. (Gadsden, Alabama), Southern Prohibition Brewing (Hattiesburg, Mississippi), Cahaba Brewing (Birmingham, Alabama), Druid City Brewing (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), Yellowhammer Brewing (Huntsville, Alabama), Fairhope Brewing Co. (Fairhope, Alabama), Brew Stooges (Huntsville, Alabama), Rocket Republic Brewing (Huntsville, Alabama) and Tallgrass Brewing (Manhattan, Kansas).

“Budweiser-Busch Distributing wanted to team up with Moe’s to introduce a specialized beer festival to the south Alabama area that not only shines the spotlight on cask ales but also the brewing talents of these local and regional breweries,” said Sarah Cure, Craft Manager for Budweiser-Busch Distributing. “Brewers typically have some fun with the creations and include interesting additions such as cocoa nibs, hot peppers, fresh whole-cone hops, orange peel, and more to accentuate the beer’s profile.”

Door open at 12pm with tapping at 12:30pm and awards for Best in Show and People’s Choice at 4pm. There will be live music during the event by Eric Lindell with headliner Keller Williams starting at 9pm.
