My First Time: Moe’s Original Bar B Que  by Grown People Talking, Matthews, North Carolina

The Charlotte area’s offerings of barbecue continue to grow. I was invited last week to visit Moe’s Original Bar B Que, which opened in June in Matthews. The barbecue franchise started as a single restaurant in Colorado by three friends who met at the University of Alabama. That pretty much explains why today nearly all of the 26 locations are either located in Colorado or the South–Alabama, Georgia, Maine, North Carolina, and Tennessee (relatively speaking, the franchise has expanded rapidly over the last three years). Okay, I’ll admit. I’ve been married to another barbecue joint for many years. Our relationship was great until Moe’s came along and stole my heart… and my taste buds. The QC Scene: Moe’s Original BBQ just opened on WCCB, Charlotte, North Carolina
Rance checked out Moe’s Original BBQ.  It’s the newest barbecue restaurant to open in the area and touts a different style.  It’s called Alabama style, but their owners say it’s a mix of cultures that make it more of a “Dixie” style.  Either way, Rance was determined to sink his teeth into the story. Located across from Will Vill on the Southside of town, Moe’s Original Bar B Que’s newest location will open at 675 30th Street on Tuesday, January 31st. From ‘Bama, via Vail Valley to Boulder, Moe’s Original Bar B Que is bringing the southern soul food revival their customers crave. With densely populated neighborhoods all around and the nice mix of university students and faculty, local families and seniors, the prime location seems like a natural fit for Moe’s Original Bar B Que to become involved with the community. Open 11am-midnight daily, the restaurant also will feature a full premium bar that will eventually stay open until 2:30am on the weekends.

Much like perfecting the recipes passed down for generations, there is a tremendous sense of pride that goes into creating the atmosphere of Moe’s Original Bar B Que. With a capacity of 75, the Boulder location has incorporated a good bit of refurbished and recycled materials. “We are giving new life to beetle kill trees from property in Evergreen, windows from a mountain cabin, and tables and chairs from restaurants past,” said owner Mike Shelly. “We have also brought some refurbished ski chairs from some of Colorado’s ski hills in from the cold.” There is a rustic, woody and comforting feel to the space with a clear separation between the family dining and bar top seating along the open air windows. The 16 seat patio allows a lucky few to enjoy the awesome Colorado weather while mowing through a plate of Moe’s Original Bar B Que.

In ten years, Moe’s Original Bar B Que has grown from a junkyard pit to 18 successful restaurants with locations in AL, CO, GA and NC. Creating a profitable family of restaurants, Moe’s Original Bar B Que’s founders have brought in partners who share their philosophy of a strong work ethic, a respect for the business plan, and a love of BBQ. Even in this economy, the company is growing at an aggressive, yet manageable pace by not opening cookie-cutter restaurants.
