My First Time: Moe’s Original Bar B Que  by Grown People Talking, Matthews, North Carolina

The Charlotte area’s offerings of barbecue continue to grow. I was invited last week to visit Moe’s Original Bar B Que, which opened in June in Matthews. The barbecue franchise started as a single restaurant in Colorado by three friends who met at the University of Alabama. That pretty much explains why today nearly all of the 26 locations are either located in Colorado or the South–Alabama, Georgia, Maine, North Carolina, and Tennessee (relatively speaking, the franchise has expanded rapidly over the last three years). Moe’s Original Bar B Que Scheduled to Open in Cullman, AL

May 17, 2013 – Joseph Fralic along with Cullman natives Justin Gilley and Tyler Schuman plan to introduce Moe’s Original Bar B Que to their hometown of Cullman at 318 1st Ave SE in late May. Moe’s Original Bar B Que serves up an award-winning, all things Southern, Alabama-style BBQ experience, complete with take out and catering. The restaurant has 20 foot ceilings and spans 4300 square feet with booths, tables and bar seating for 90 while the 800 square foot patio seats 50 out front under the breeze of a huge fan. With a full premium bar, bushwackers and 12 beers on tap, the hickory wood bar extends 40 feet and is surrounded by huge HDTVs and a view of the stage for live music. In in effort to help revitalize the heart of downtown, the restaurant was a complete build out that kept with the character of the old building while allowing the owners to create the ultimate Moe’s Original Bar B Que experience from scratch.

“Justin, Joseph and I all enjoy being a part of the culture that surrounds Moe’s Original Bar B Que,” said co-owner Tyler Schuman.  “We wanted to bring that vibe and atmosphere to Cullman as this is where Justin and I grew up.”

Headquarted in Vail, Moe’s Original Bar B Que was founded by Alabama three boys; Mike Fernandez from Tuscaloosa, Ben Gilbert from Athens, and Jeff Kennedy from Huntsville. These partners learned how to fire roast meats from Tuscalooa legend Moses Day and it is his distinct style makes up Moe’s original flavor of BBQ. Local owners Justin and Tyler moved from Cullman to Vail when given the opportunity by the founding partners to join the team. After spending a year with the founders learning the ins and outs of running the restaurant and bar, they moved back South, added partner Joseph and honed their skills at several of the other Moe’s Original locations. Moe’s Original Bar B Que has quickly becoming a player in the fast casual marketplace with eleven additional Alabama locations as well as fourteen restaurants in Colorado, Georgia, Maine and North Carolina.

Moe’s Original Bar B Que To Expand into Mobile, Alabama with New Restaurant and Live Music Venue

Moe’s Original Bar B Que is pleased to announce its opening in early January at 701 Spring Hill Avenue in downtown Mobile. Located on the main Mardi Gras parade route, this 7400 square foot spot in the upper part of Dauphin will offer a hot nightlife scene. While the popular fast casual restaurant and catering company will feature award-winning cuisine, it will also be an entertainment venue that will showcase live music from larger, well-known musical acts as well as host events including birthday parties, reunions, corporate meetings, wedding parties, and more.

“When we saw this enormous space, it just screamed Moe’s Original,” said owner Mark White. “I feel we have captured my ultimate vision of expanding our concept by creating a cool entertainment destination that nicely complements our casual, family-friendly dining environment.”

Located in an old Lincoln car dealership, the art deco building will be found by a large neon Moe’s Original Bar B Que arrow sign. The totally renovated interior keeps with the rustic look of Moe’s Original Bar B Que’s brand with wooden beams across the ceiling, timber accents and exposed brick walls. The interior space is divided into two parts with the main dining area in the front with a large, full premium bar in the center surrounded by bar stools and multiple large flat screen TVs. The bars as well as the music stage were re-purposed out of the lanes from the old Florida Bowl. Behind the bar is a wall with two large doors and exposed windows across the high ceilings that infuse the space with light to create an al fresco feel when opened up into the larger rear space. The back left houses the kitchen while the stage is located in the right corner with an additional bar as this area will be primarily used for live music events and private parties.

Founded in Vail in 2001, Moe’s Original Bar B Que has 20 other locations in AL, CO, GA, ME and NC. The popular fast casual restaurant features award-winning Alabama-style pulled pork, ribs, wings, turkey and chicken smoked over hardwood served with two unique sauces as well as southern favorites such as fried catfish and shrimp sandwiches.
